When Paul Mellon died in February 1999, he left the Center nearly three hundred paintings, sixty-four mostly small-scale sculptures, large numbers of drawings and prints, and a magnificent group of rare books. These were the works he chose to keep for his own pleasure until the end of his life, and they represent the more personal side of his great British collection. To the vast array of his gifts to the Center since its opening in 1977, they brought a firmer sense of his own life, character, and interests. — —
Mellon’s passion for English country life was rooted in childhood experiences: his aversion to the grim, moneymaking world of his unresponsive father, his happy early visits to England, homeland of his mother. For him England was truly a green and pleasant land. Taken together, the works in the bequest present an idyllic vision of the place, green and fresh, a paradise of hunting, shooting, fishing, and horse racing. — —
This exhibition included about 150 paintings from the bequest, with a complementary selection of sculptures, drawings, and rare books. Among the highlights were eleven paintings by George Stubbs, eighteen oil sketches by John Constable, a small painting on copper by William Blake, and nine paintings, largely of equine subjects, by the early twentieth-century painter Robert Bevan. — —
Credits — —
Malcolm Warner, a former Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Center, curated the exhibition, which was accompanied by a published illustrated catalogue. — —

Paul Mellon acquired his lifelong love of country pursuits at Cambridge in 1930, and it was to encourage his interest in quintessentially English field sports that his mother, herself a keen horsewoman, presented him with the big Irish bay stallion called Dublin. In his memoirs, Mr. Mellon described Dublin as his favorite among the many hunters he had owned over a period of sixty years. “He pulled a bit and was strong as a locomotive,” wrote Mr. Mellon, “and was strong as a locomotive, but although a so-called three-quarter-bred, he had enough foot and staying power not to disgrace me in several point-to-points. He could have jumped the Eiffel Tower. I think it was Dublin more than anything else who assured my lifelong addiction to hunting. He had huge quarters and a wonderful long front, and his eye had the ‘look of eagles’” (Mellon, 1992, p. 228).\n\n
In many respects, Munnings was a natural choice of artist for this commission because he had an established Anglo-American clientele, was himself passionate about foxhunting, and had painted similar open-air portraits of the Prince of Wales, the Princess Royal, and members of the English aristocracy. Mr. Mellon recalled bringing Munnings by train to the farm near Eastleach, in Gloucestershire, where Dublin was boarded, so that sketches could be made. Munnings returned there several times on his own, presumably feeling freer to go about his business unobserved. He chose, however, to execute the portrait of his young patron in the comfort of his studio in Chelsea. The result is the best surviving portrait of Paul Mellon, one that conveys not merely the sitter’s passion for sport but also his natural grace and elegance.\n\n
Mr. Mellon’s companions in the background could belong to any of the three packs with whom he rode in Gloucestershire at this date: the Duke of Beaufort’s hounds, the Vale of White Horse Hunt (VWH Bathurst and Cricklade), and the Cotswold.\n\n

"He pulled a bit and was strong as a locomotive," Paul Mellon wrote of his Irish hunter Dublin, "but although a so-called three-quarter-bred, he had enough foot and staying power not to disgrace me in several point-to-points. He could have jumped the Eiffel Tower. I think it was Dublin more than anything else who assured my lifelong addiction to hunting. He had huge quarters and a wonderful long front, and his eye had the 'look of eagles.'" Munnings painted the portrait largely during Paul Mellon's visit to England in 1932, the horse at its stables in Gloucestershire and Paul Mellon in the studio in Chelsea. Before delivering the finished work, Munnings sent a photograph. Paul Mellon wrote to him that he found the bushy willow tree on the left a little disturbing and asked whether he could do something to make it less prominent. "Sometime later I got a blast back saying in the first place, the tree wasn't a willow, it was a pollarded oak, and second, he had no intention of changing anything whatsoever. So that was that."\n\n
