A prolific artist, James Ward, R.A. (1769–1859) was one of the finest animal, portrait, and landscape painters of Regency England. Brittle, pious, and argumentative, Ward worked well into the mid-nineteenth century, creating dynamic compositions that epitomized Romanticism. He was devoted to the art of Rubens and Van Dyck, and emulated them more than any of his contemporaries. This retrospective of James Ward’s work was drawn entirely from the Center’s collections of paintings, drawings, prints, and manuscripts, and offered viewers a rare opportunity to see the full range of this brilliant and neglected artist. — —

When Paul Mellon died in February 1999, he left the Center nearly three hundred paintings, sixty-four mostly small-scale sculptures, large numbers of drawings and prints, and a magnificent group of rare books. These were the works he chose to keep for his own pleasure until the end of his life, and they represent the more personal side of his great British collection. To the vast array of his gifts to the Center since its opening in 1977, they brought a firmer sense of his own life, character, and interests. — —
Mellon’s passion for English country life was rooted in childhood experiences: his aversion to the grim, moneymaking world of his unresponsive father, his happy early visits to England, homeland of his mother. For him England was truly a green and pleasant land. Taken together, the works in the bequest present an idyllic vision of the place, green and fresh, a paradise of hunting, shooting, fishing, and horse racing. — —
This exhibition included about 150 paintings from the bequest, with a complementary selection of sculptures, drawings, and rare books. Among the highlights were eleven paintings by George Stubbs, eighteen oil sketches by John Constable, a small painting on copper by William Blake, and nine paintings, largely of equine subjects, by the early twentieth-century painter Robert Bevan. — —

Malcolm Warner, a former Curator of Paintings and Sculpture at the Center, curated the exhibition, which was accompanied by a published illustrated catalogue. — —

The Levett family of Staffordshire was on close terms with James Ward and bought and commissioned a number of works from him. Here, Theophilus Levett has climbed a hill, high above the rest of the hunt, where he cuts a heroic and commanding figure, the mud spattered on his coat serving as a reminder of the hard riding he has done. Only he and his hunter can see the fox, which is running over the hill on the right to escape the hounds in the valley below. The view of the Trent Valley shows the artist’s close study of the landscapes of Peter Paul Rubens.

Ward has chosen to portray the climactic moment of a fox-hunt, enabling him to demonstrate his talents at horse portraiture, sporting subjects, and landscape, all at once. Hidden behind the hill in the foreground, the location of the fox can be estimated at the convergence of the horse’s gaze, the master’s riding crop, the muzzle of the leading horse below, and the trajectory of the pack of hounds. Ward intensifies the drama of the moment by contrasting the agitation of the animals with the composure of the master. Striking details such as the distinctive markings of the horse and the mud on Mr. Levett’s red coat emphasize Ward’s easy familiarity with his subject.
