Romantics & Revolutionaries brought to the Center over ninety stunning portraits of the most charismatic and engaging personalities from the era known as the Regency, dating from 1790 to 1830. It presented some of the most famous images of the heroes and heroines of the age, including Lord Byron, Keats, Shelley, Jane Austen, Wordsworth, Lady Emma Hamilton and her lover Lord Nelson, as well as the Regent himself, who later became George IV. — —
Drawn entirely from the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London, these paintings are among that institution’s most precious treasures. They were made available for a tour in the United States while the museum’s Regency galleries were undergoing refurbishment. — —
Romantics & Revolutionaries also included complementary rare books and manuscripts, selected from the Center’s holdings and from other Yale collections by Elisabeth Fairman, Curator of Rare Books and Archives at the Center. Works by the great Romantic writers and poets were on display, along with illustrated books and ephemera related to the illustrious men and women depicted in the painted portraits. — —

The exhibition was a project of the National Portrait Gallery, London. ArtReach International organized its American tour. — —
